The local scoop about Maui

Are you ready for adventure or sunshine, food and relaxation? We write about activities, restaurants and beaches, the best of Maui. So grab a scoop of shaved ice and sit down for a visit.

Seasons: Summer is hot in Lahaina and Kihei and cooler in Haiku, Hana and upcountry. Winters are warm to visitors but cool to locals. The locals hate slightly non-hot weather. Hana is always cooler and more rugged. Kihei is very dry and warm, only 4 inches of rain in an entire year. So you are almost guaranteed to have a good tan relaxing on the beach in Kihei or similar with Lahaina. In one day you can venture to and from Kihei or Lahaina to Hana and the tropical rainforest complete with waterfalls and walk in a mist of light rain on a hot day, though a bamboo forest.

Or go upcountry to Haleakala and see breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.
Some hardy visitors and locals 'hike the crater' which takes about 2 nights, 3 days. Not a drop of water in sight, looks like you are hiking on Mars.

Giant shore break waves are typical during the summer. Very little to see snorkelling there, some reef fish on the north point. If you climb the north hill you will arrive at 'Little Beach' a place famous in the 70's and 80's for nude sunbathing.
